Henry was only eighteen when he left the countryside and travelled to Japan.

He had come to walk the Kumano Kodo, hoping the long journey through the mountains would help him understand what he wanted from life. At first, he enjoyed being alone. But after several days, he began to feel that something was following him.

The trail led Henry deep into a green, ancient forest. Tall bamboo rose on either side of the path, their slender stems swaying gently above him. Ferns covered the forest floor, while thick moss climbed over stones and the roots of enormous trees. Everything was damp and alive. Sunlight struggled to pass through the thick canopy, leaving patches of golden light between deep green shadows.

The air smelled of cypress and hinoki wood.

Henry loved it.

It reminded him of the countryside he had left behind, but there was something different here. Something he couldn't quite explain.

Sometimes he heard a branch snap behind him.

Other times, he could hear footsteps on the trail that stopped whenever he stopped.

One afternoon, tired from walking, Henry reached a small shrine. He took off his backpack and sat beneath the wooden shelter.

Nearby was a vending machine.

He had bought a bottle of iced green tea at a vending machine in the pass and slowly drank it while looking into the forest.

For a few minutes, he felt calm.

Then the smell changed.

Then clove and cinnamon.

Henry lowered his bottle.

There was nobody around.

He stood and looked down the trail.

Nothing.

Only bamboo, ferns and thick green vegetation stretching into the distance.

He decided to continue walking.

Then came the smell of leather and old wood, followed by sandalwood, cedarwood and something that reminded him of white musk.

It was beautiful.

But it made Henry uneasy.

He stopped and too a deep breath.

The forest became completely silent.

Then, from somewhere behind him, a voice quietly said:

“Hello.”

Henry froze.

His heart began pounding.

Slowly, he turned around.

There was no one there.

“Hello?” he whispered.

Nothing.

He stared into the bamboo, trying to see through the shadows.

Then the voice came again.

“Hello, Henry.”

This time, it sounded as though someone was standing right beside him.

A cold shiver travelled down his spine.

Henry wanted to run.

But he couldn't move.

All around him, the green forest stood perfectly still.

Then he heard footsteps behind him.

One.

Then another.

Henry closed his eyes.

Whatever had been following him had finally decided to speak and he was no longer alone....
