She sits at the bar, alone, neon bouncing off her pale skin. A cucumber martini sweats in her hand, ice clinking like tiny alarms. Black dress, sharp shoulders, heels clicking softly against marble, she moves like she’s already left the room before she’s even in it.
The dealer glances up, then back at her. He knows something, or thinks he does. He shouldn’t, but he can’t help it.
She glides toward the blackjack table, slow, deliberate, every step measured. Under the table, a sleek gun rests against her thigh. She doesn’t need it, yet, but it’s there. The man in the grey suit, the one who’s been watching her since she walked in, doesn’t look away. His eyes follow, betraying curiosity, desire, fear. Maybe all three.
She sips the martini, crisp and cold, like control distilled into green liquid. Cards shuffle, chips clink, the roulette wheel spins. She doesn’t blink. She doesn’t flinch. She’s everything contained, everything lethal, everything unreadable. And he can’t stop watching.
By the end of the night, she hasn’t won, hasn’t lost, hasn’t even broken stride. The weapon is still there. The martini is empty. And he’s still staring, wondering what he’s glimpsed and what he’ll never know.
She removes herself from the table, walks away, heels clicking like a countdown, leaving only the faint scent of cucumber and a quiet, unnerving thrill behind.
