Thelma Paris' low-smoke sticks come 48 to a box: Harmony is lavender, Contemplation violet with cypress and sandalwood, Après Ski iris. Japanese master craftsmen make them in Tokyo without a bamboo core; bark of the tabu tree binds the resins, so the scent comes through with hardly any smoke, which also suits small rooms.
Be Kind Industries' natural incense is hand-rolled in small batches by artisans in India, from recipes handed down over 200 years, ten 20 cm sticks to a pack. Each of its six scents is named after a place: Wicklow's Way is oud, Hill of Tara sandalwood, Djouce Woods agarwood, Hollywood frankincense and myrrh, Wild Atlantic Way lemongrass and Avoca orange blossom.
For the ash there are the Wabi-Sabi holders that Jessica Dardar makes by hand for Thelma Paris, each signed and 8 cm across; OCTAEVO's Templo pedestal in stoneware, which doubles as a place for small treasures; and o cactuu's Lyot burner in a green glaze, handcrafted in Portugal, which takes sage and palo santo as well.
Light the tip, let the flame burn for 10 to 20 seconds, then blow it out and set the stick in a holder on a heat-resistant surface. Air the room regularly, and let the ash cool completely before you throw it away.
