Niche perfume: choose slowly, one scent at a time

A fragrance changes on your skin. Bright top notes open it, a heart of flowers, spices or tea carries it through the day, and woods, resins and musk stay close until evening. That is why the first spray tells you little: give a scent a few hours on skin before you decide. Our scent guide explains the families and concentrations.

A discovery set is the easiest way to start: wear one scent a day and notice which one you still like in the evening. Once you know your favourites, try layering, which means wearing two scents on top of each other. Start with a simple base, such as a soft wood or a musk, and add a scent with more character on top; within one family it rarely goes wrong. In summer one spray is often enough, on cold days you can use a little more.
