Morning light at the window, a few unhurried minutes at the mirror, and lashes that frame the eyes with quiet intensity.

The wand has two sides. The curved one coats the lashes from the root and builds volume; the flat one draws them out for length, separates them and reaches the lower lashes. The formula, a deep black with a creamy texture, combines beeswax and carnauba wax with raspberry fruit water, marula and sunflower seed oils, and is COSMOS ORGANIC certified by Ecocert Greenlife.

The Iconic Edition case is designed to be refilled.

The formula stays workable for a short while after application, which leaves time for a second coat.

Begin with the curved side of the wand facing you and sweep it from the base of the lashes upwards; this builds volume. The flat side lengthens and separates, which helps at the outer corners and on the lower lashes. A second coat goes on best while the first is still soft.

At the end of the day, hold a cotton pad soaked in eye makeup remover against the closed eye for half a minute or so, then wipe gently and rinse with water.

Kjaer Weis was launched in May 2010 by makeup artist Kirsten Kjaer Weis. Its look draws on Danish minimalism, and from the start she gave the case as much thought as the colour inside it: creamy textures for cheeks, lips and eyes, held in an object worth keeping.

For that case, Kjaer Weis approached the French designer Marc Atlan, whose perfume bottle for Comme des Garçons had been an inspiration. Together they developed the Iconic Edition, a metal case designed to be refilled: when the makeup is used up, only the pan or inner tube is replaced. The design took around two years to refine and comes in a box of red textured paper.
